The newly opened Souk on H Street brings pan-Mediterranean flair to Capitol Hill. Souk’s a small, yet cozy, exotically tiled, with jewel tones, lanterns hanging from the ceiling, and pillow-strewn nooks for an authentic Middle-Eastern vibe. Souk is owned and operated by Alami Rahim and offers dine in and carry out with a menu featuring various Middle Eastern dishes. The open kitchen allows diners to enjoy watching the owner himself prepare food from recipes passed down from his Moroccan grandma, who cooked professionally for a French colonial family and exclusively served dishes made with non-canned, healthy ingredients. A bit like counter-culture, there are no waiters tableside; however, diners order at the counter and the food is quickly brought to you with a smile. There is no bar, but there are refrigerators stocked with sodas, water, and juice. On the menu, enjoy appetizers such as Zaalouk (Moroccan-style eggplant w/ tomatoes/olive oil) and Sambousick (pastries w/ ground beef/pine nuts), Large Grape leaves, enough to be an entire meal, plus greens like the shrimp/feta/watermelon/arugula “Souk Salad”, and the more traditional tomatoes/cucumbers/scallions Fatoush. Entrees available are affordable and range from kebabs to stuffed lamb shanks and tagines from $9 to $13. There are many Fish and vegetarian dishes. Heartier fare includes sandwiches like the grilled lamb sausage/peppers/olives/zaalouk sauce Mergues, and the spiced beef, overflowing pita Kafta; entrees like beef/chicken kebobs w/ tomato reduction and basmati, the grilled swordfish/cherry tomatoes/sharmola sauce Fish Tagine, or the lamp chops/grilled veggies/dried fruits/onion saffron sauce Kotlet. With very limited seating, of about 25 seats, diners find that carry-out is a better option. Souk is waiting on their liquor license; beer/wine is not available at this time.
