The long awaited, Kora will be maybe officially open for business Thursday … according to Morou, who I just spoke to on the phone. Kora is located in the space formerly occupied by Roberto Donna’s Bebo, at 2250 Crystal Drive. Chef Morou Ouattara is best known for his highly acclaimed restaurant named for he and his wife’s oldest daughter, Farah Olivia. Following its closure in June, Morou shifted his attention to Kora, named for their youngest daughter. Morou actually told me when I talked with him at the Best of Washington party that they haven’t told their oldest daughter that Farrah Olivia is closed. He said that he was afraid to upset her. He also said that she insists that the restaurant is “HERS”!! Sounds like there is going to be some sibling rivalry as soon as she figures out that there is a new restaurant that belongs to Kora *wink* 😉

The casual Italian dining room features lofty ceilings, large windows, and a brilliantly illuminated bar with plush gray booths, and an old-style brick oven.  Morou’s brother, Amadou, formerly of I’Ricchi has helped to formulate the Italian menu and plans to join Morou in the kitchen. Their opening menu includes classic pizzas and pastas. The Lunch and brunch menu includes entrees like sauteed veal scallopini, paninis like the Ital-sausage Salsiccia and the meatballed Purpetti, and the Angus chuck/focaccia Kora Burger. The wine list which was formed by Heather Ouattara will include pan-Italian wines, taps pouring Peroni, Amstel, Flying Dog, and Brooklyn Lager, and dainty cocktails like the Campari/Dubonnet Red/prosecco “ChamPino” and the maraschino/Frangelico/creme de cacao/shaved chocolate/grenadine “Chocolate Covered Cherry”.

I can’t wait to check it out.
